Always Merry and Bright: The Life of Henry Miller: An Unauthorized Biography
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (July, 1980)
Author: Jay. Martin
Average review score:

The Best Miller Biography
I have been a fan of Henry Miller since the early 1960's, when to read his banned work meant trekking up to the Treasure Room of Columbia University's library and having the book delivered to your carrel, a la the research scene in Citizen Kane. When Jay Martin's bio of Henry was published in 1978 I read it immediately with great pleasure. On Henry's birth centenary in 1991 two more biographies came out, which I read, and I'm writing to say Martin's is the best. Incidentally, in June 2002 while driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles on a little tour, in Big Sur I passed a Henry Miller institute/library, and did a u-turn after a few seconds of realization that this was probably my last chance to pay homage. What a throwback to the '60's (which, btw, I don't think Henry was a fan of.) Anyway, I recommend the pilgrimage for all of Henry's fans.

Amazing Grains: Creating Vegetarian Main Dishes With Whole Grains
Published in Paperback by HJ Kramer (June, 1990)
Authors: Joanne Saltzman and Jay Harlow
Average review score:

Amazing Grains! Amazing Recipes! Amazing Directions!
I never knew there were so many different types of grains, or different ways to prepare them. This book is facinating reading. Not only does Joanne explain the characteristics of different grains, but also the different types of cooking liquids, salt seasonings, oils, vegetables, herbs and spices that make up a dish, and (very helpful) how substituting other ingredients can vary the dish. My favorite recipe is "Oats, Onions, and Thyme". It uses steel-cut oats, and is a delightful change of pace from rice.

I also recommend her other book "Romancing The Bean"

The Amazing Magic Fact Machine

Amazing!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this book for my son. I certainly didn't expect to have to drag him away from it every dinner time! My son is 10 and has no idea how this book "magically" answers questions. I am 39 and have no idea either. An extremely intellegent book.

American Indian Games
Published in Library Binding by Bt Bound (October, 2001)
Author: Jay Miller

Lacrosse and beyond
"American Indian Games," by Jay Miller, is a good educational book for younger readers. It has an easy-to-read text, and is richly illustrated with many photographs.

This book tells about many of the games and toys of Native Americans, both in the past and present. Among the topics covered are "jabber" toys (used to challenge hand-eye coordination), snowsnake (a game that involves throwing a spear along a groove in snow or ice), and more. There are many fascinating photos, such as one of sled made from buffalo ribs.

The book covers lacrosse, which is probably the best known traditional American Indian sport. The author notes that some Native American peoples play a one-racket version, whereas some play a two-racket version (both types are shown in the photos). The book also discusses Native American participation in games and sports introduced by the Europeans. Overall, a very interesting book.

A Great Book for Engineers
This book is very good for engineering and business. The book is easy to read and to follow. I apply statistics concepts from this book in business and technical problem solving at work. This book has 11 chapters. These chapters have statistical techniques that the industry is using. The student solution manual is also a great tool to learn statistical techniques from this book. It is great!

Architecture in Texas : 1895-1945
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Texas Press (August, 1993)
Author: Jay C. Henry
Average review score:

Great stuff for Texans
With this entertainingly written and well organized book, you can settle down to painlessly learn about Texas history and architecture. Or have fun browsing.Look in the index to seek out the parts about favorite buildings in your town or city. Once you start, you'll have a hard time finding a place to stop. This wonderful book includes a zillion pictures of familiar and beloved structures, including *historic railroad stations, *the campuses of UT, Rice, SMU, Texas Tech, etc.*the office buildings, department stores, hotels, movie theaters, banks, and other commercial structures that mark the downtowns of the state's big and small cities, *city halls, courthouses, post offices, etc.*churches, houses, roadside gas stations & motels. This volume includes photos of fine buildings from Galveston to El Paso, and even from my smalltown hometown of Seguin in between (maybe your hometown has some entries, too).It also describes the identifying features of the various architectural styles (Romanesque, Mission Revival, Art Deco, etc.) in a way that a layman can quickly understand. It helps us appreciate the quality of what was been built in our cities and towns in the first half of the 20th century.

An OUTSTANDING resource for the exploration of Arizona Trout
Here is the best tip that I can give anyone for fly fishing Arizona, ready? Buy it! Try buying it right here you won't find it in the shops yet. Get your credit card out, and type me a message right now telling me "thank you" so you don't have to hold yourself up e-mailing adam while you are getting ready to explore all the wonderful opportunities that are exposed in this book. I am absolutely impressed! In 1999, no less than three books on Arizona Fly Fishing have been released for the public. This book is a MUST HAVE for any fly fisher in the state of Arizona. If you have to buy one book, this is it. It is my favorite, did I say that? For those of you visiting the state, this resource is definitely one that puts you in touch with more information than most of the locals. Mr Johnson is obviously a very keen Arizona explorer with a fly rod. In a nutshell, you will not find any careless meanderings, no miss marked maps, just a Christopher Columbus of fly fishing here in our state. Gee's this guy has been around. The answers are there for questions that are very close to my heart. I will not go into detail about this book other than I TOLD YOU SO! Do you want Arizona Trout???
